High Performance Air Intake

Imagine smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day and taking up running as a hobby. It’s not going to work very well is it? A cold air intake is like never smoking your whole life and eating a healthy diet…..of air, a vital component in combustion car & truck engines.

Cold air intakes move the air filter outside of the engine compartment so that cooler air can be sucked into the engine for combustion. Cooler air brings more oxygen (denser air) into the combustion chamber and that means more power. The filters are usually moved to the upper wheel well area or near a fender where there is more access to free flowing, cooler air and less hot air from the engine.

Not only does a cold air intake reduce the air temperature, but it also increases airflow. Aftermarket intakes remove the need for a box surrounding the air filter and instead use large diameter intake tubes that are smoother, have less bends and are often wider than the original factory ones. Removing the airbox and using smoother tubes gives the engine uninterrupted airflow.

Valves

The intake and exhaust valves open at the proper time to let in air and fuel and to let out exhaust. Note that both valves are closed during compression and combustion so that the combustion chamber is sealed.

piston

A piston is a cylindrical piece of metal that moves up and down inside the cylinder and provides the motion to turn your axels through the crank shaft. Notice the image below…the pistons are moving up and down by an explosion of gas that pushes the piston in the opposite direction.

piston rings

Piston rings provide a sliding seal between the outer edge of the piston and the inner edge of the cylinder. The rings serve two purposes:

  1. They prevent the fuel/air mixture and exhaust in the combustion chamber from leaking into the sump during compression and combustion.
  2. They keep oil in the sump from leaking into the combustion area, where it would be burned and lost.

Most cars that “burn oil” and have to have a quart added every 1,000 miles are burning it because the engine is old and the rings no longer seal things properly. Many modern vehicles use more advance materials for piston rings. That’s one of the reasons why engines last longer and can go longer between oil changes.

Crankshaft

The crankshaft turns the piston’s up-and-down motion into circular motion just like a crank on a jack-in-the-box does.

A brake rotor is a substantial metal disk that sits just behind each wheel. It’s not actually attached to the wheel, but it is attached directly to the axle. When you apply pressure to the brake pedal, a pair of brake pads clamp the disk from either side. The friction created slows the vehicle or brings it to a stop.

The sump surrounds the crankshaft. It contains some amount of oil, which collects in the bottom of the sump (the oil pan).

The spark plug supplies the spark that ignites the air/fuel mixture so that combustion can occur. The spark must happen at just the right moment for things to work properly.
